C05 Introduction to SQL

3 Day Course
Course Overview:
The course provides a comprehensive introduction to use of the Structured Query Language, commonly known as SQL. Most of the learning is “hands-on”, allowing the student to rapidly become familiar with the constructs necessary to extract information from, and manipulate data in, relational databases.

Day One
Introduction and Objectives, Teaching Method, Brief history of SQL
Elements of a Relational Database (tables, columns, relationships)
Select queries – a first look
Structure of the basic SQL statement
Specific versus all columns
Applying simple conditions
Applying compound conditions
Additional comparison operators
The null value
Sorting results

Day Two

Select queries – a further look
Queries involving calculated values
Summarising values – group by and aggregation
Groups with conditions – the Having clause

Duration:   
3 days (8.00 to 16.00)                   

Intended participants: 
Business Analysts, System Developers, Data Modellers and others (e.g. management, auditors) who need to extract data from corporate databases. Essentially, anyone needing to write or modify SQL queries.

Presenter:
Amberjack Systems Engineering.  Two trainers are used for the duration of the course, which ensures that all participants receive the necessary focused attention during practical exercises. Both trainers have extensive experience with SQL (and relational databases). 

Pre-requisites
None. However, it would be very advantageous to have attended the ‘Introduction to Data Modelling’ course.
