A task group represented by South African manufacturers, distributors and retailers of the FMCG industry and the Consumer Goods Council of S.A., was formed in 1998 to look at ways to modernize and streamline the flow of product data throughout the supply chain. They unanimously agreed that a Product Data Catalogue (PDC) should be established in South Africa with the aim to have one set of accurate, standardised product data available for use in all trade transactions. Having accurate product data available would ultimately improve supply chain management and efficiency. CGCSA manages the development of the product data catalogue, referred to as the PDC.za, and currently hosts the PDC.za Central database. The PDC.za was designed to integrate into a company’s internal system and will link up with other global PDC’s in the future.
The PDC.za enables brand owners, manufacturers, suppliers, agents, wholesalers and importers to load new product data and manage or update existing product data, of a non-competitive nature on a central master database. Retailers can search for, subscribe to, and integrate this product information into their internal systems to enable trading with correct product data.
